Valentines Day

Valentine’s Day

BIBLE PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Presented February 17, 2002 at Bethany Presbyterian Church, Sacramento CA

(You will need to prepare Valentines for the children, with the edited version of 1 Corinthians as it is given below)

“Last Thursday (or whenever) was a fun day at school, I bet. Who remembers what last Thursday was? (Wait for response) Valentine’s Day – that’s right. Did you get some nice Valentine’s? I got some nice Valentine’s from two people in my life who I love very much. In school I know you get different kinds of Valentines – I’ve got some here. (Read from the school-type Valentines you can purchase from Dollar Store, etc. Close with “Roses are red, violets are blue, skunks are stinky and so are… well, never mind that one.” Wait for the laugh)

I have Valentines for each one of you, written a long, long time ago by a friend of mine. Actually, I never met this person, but he gave it to friends of his, who gave it to friends of theirs who passed it a long time down the road it was given to me and now I want to give it to you.

(Ask the Children to help pass out the Valentines.) Here is the message: “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. Love always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always remains constant. Love never fails.”

This was written by a friend of mine named Paul who was writing to friends of his in a city called Corinth.  You can find this Valentine in a very good book. The book is right here and it is filled with love letters of all kinds. And in the New Testament you will find the greatest love story in history. Not kissy love, but the love for you, for your family, your friends, and everyone. And take that message with you in everything you say and everything you do. And THESE Valentines are just for you from the church so you know how much you are loved.
