Who Am I? I Am A Child of God

Lesson:  What you look like is not who you are

Bible Passage:  James 1:23-24

This requires more preparation than usual.  Small mirrors can be found cheaply at craft stores like Michael’s.  I glued the mirrors into clear plastic cups to avoid the glass edge.  Computer programs can print the message on labels, which can be adhered to the back of the mirror or the cup into which they are glued.

Read JAMES 1:23 –24 “Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like.”

Hand out small mirrors to the children.  Tell them that what they are looking at is not who you are.  This may be the face that God gave them – and assure them it is a beautiful face – but just like the clothes you are wearing, it is not who you are.   Who you are is on the back of the mirror. On the back of the mirror is a label, reading “I AM A CHILD OF GOD.”  Explain that as a Child of God, they must go out and live the life that God wants them to live – a life filled with loving their family and their neighbors and of doing good.
