Lesson: God’s Love for You is HUGE!
Bible Passage: 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 and Mark 9:2-9
This Moment is probably my favorite. It is very simple and can be used in many different ways. For this example we shall use a box, but anything – the wackier the better – can be used. There is a link to a video example using light at the end of this Moment.
Show the children a box, a good size but one you can hold in your one hand. Tell them this box represents how much you love them. It’s a good box and a good size and I love you very much.
Bring out a larger box – maybe a Xerox paper box – and tell them this is how much their family love them. (NOTE: Use the word “family” instead of “parents.” Not all kids live with their parents but in the worse case, “family” could include church family.) Explain that their family loves them very much.
Finally, find the largest box you can – maybe a refrigerator box. Have two people bring it in. Drop it in front of the children and say, “If you had a box a thousand times this size, it would be how much God loves you.” Explain that God has loved them since before they were born and will always love them, no matter what.
This works with any object, but the best was when I had an “earth ball” available. An earth ball is about six feet high and a quick Internet check can find them for $120. Clearly, this would be a long term investment for most churches and a wonderful way to introduce the ball to the church youth.
Other forms could be with music – a tiny piano, a serious – but short – musical piece on a real piano, and a full organ recital, blowing out the pipes! You can also use a small flashlight, a larger flashlight and a spotlight or anything else your imagination and resources allow. Using flashlights – and a construction light bar I purchased for $30 at Harbor Freight – gave us this Children’s Moment. Click on the link for How Much God Loves You
