Preparing for the Light – A Winter’s Solstice Moment

Glowsticks can be acquired at a Dollar Store or online

“Hello, hello, hello! I am so glad everyone is here. I know we are all excited about what is coming in a few days. Do youknwo what that is? That’s right – it’s the Winter Solstice!

What – that’s not what youwere thinking?

The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year on our calendar and it’s gong to be on Thursday (or whichever day). So if it’s the shortest DAY of the yar, that means it is also the longest… (wait for it) NIGHT of the year. And if it;s the longest night of the year, that means it’s what? DARK!

Well, I have something to temporarily keep away the dark. When the sun goes down and you need some light, (bring out the glow stick) just CRACK one of these and you’ll have a nice glow to keep you company.

But there is something else happening later in a few days. Do you know what that is? (Hope that the Children answer ‘Christmas!’) And do you know what Christmas is? (Pray someone says something abut the birth of Jesus)

Yes, the main reason for Christmas, along wit the fun and the presents and Santa and everything good, is the celebration of the birth of Jesus, born of Mary and the Holy Spirit and whom we consider to be the great light of the universe. Jesus’ teachings of God’s will is the greatest gift in history and we like to think of him as “The Light of the World.”

So on (Thursday) – or any other night – when we are in the dark and even maybe a little afraid – we can crack open a glow stick to keep us company. And as we celebrate the birth of Jesus this next week, remember that he is with us always, in brightest day or blackest night, we are always in his sight. And he is alwayas bringing us the light of his love.
