Lesson: We are one in Christ’s family
Bible Passage:
One of my favorites. Most Children’s Moments have a single speaker, even though in this case, you will want to recruit people from your congregation, specifically seeking out those who are different from each other (Gender, Race, Age, Language, etc.) In this example, the speaker is a White, English-speaking male. You should adapt this to your specific characteristics.
Once the children are seated, Speaker announces “I am a Child of God. All Children of God look like me. They are men, they are white, they are Christian, they are…”
Person #1 (female) interrupts by standing and saying “I am a Child of God.”
Speaker stops, looks at person #1 and says “But you are not a man!”
Person #1 says with persistence “I AM A CHILD OF GOD!”
Speaker says “Then come join me, Sister.”
Person #1 leaves her pew and joins the speaker before the children.
Speaker says “We are the Children of God. We are adults, we are white, we are Christian, we are…
Person #2 (a non-White) interrupts by standing and saying “I am a Child of God.”
Speaker stops, looks at person #2 and says “But you are not White like us!”
Person #2 says with persistence “I AM A CHILD OF GOD!”
Speaker says “Then come join us, Brother.”
Person #2 leaves his pew and joins the group before the children.
Speaker says “We are the Children of God. We speak English, we are adults, we are Christian,…
Person #3 interrupts by standing and saying, in a different language (Japanese) “I am a Child of God.”
Speaker stops, looks at person #3 and says “But you are not speaking English like us! You are not a Child of God”
Person #3 says with persistence, first in Japanese and then in English “I AM A CHILD OF GOD!”
Speaker says, in Japanese and then in English “Then come join us, Sister.”
Person #3 leaves her pew and joins the group before the children.
Speaker says “We are the Children of God. We speak God’s words, we are adults, we are Christian,…
Person #4 interrupts by standing and signing (American Sign Language) “I am a Child of God.”
Speaker stops, looks at person #4 and says “But you can’t even speak God’s words like us! You are not a Child of God”
Person #4 signs emphatically “I AM A CHILD OF GOD!”
Speaker says and signs “Then come join us, Sister.”
Person #4 leaves her pew and joins the group before the children.
Speaker, to the children, “WE are Children of God. We are men, women, black, yellow, brown, white and all shades in between. We are older and we are younger and we speak in many languages. But we all know God’s love, we have experienced God’s miracles and we all try to live the rules God has set for us, in the ten commandments and through Creator God’s son, Jesus Christ, who taught us to love God, love our neighbor and to love our enemy. All of us, together, are one in Jesus and we are one in love.
