Lesson: God’s words to us through the Bible are priceless
Bible Passage:
A coin from the time of Jesus – or within a few hundred years of his birth – can be bought surprisingly inexpensively on eBay or from a coin dealer. I purchased a coin from circa 350 AD for less than $5.00. Also, it never hurts to pick up Bibles at a thrift store. I recommend a Bible written in easy to understand English (New International Version is my favorite) but you can buy King James versions for a dollar at the Dollar Store.
Show the children a coin from the time of Jesus. Tell them that although this coin is very old, it was purchased only for $5.00 (or whatever you paid).
Now show them a Bible. Tell them that they can have one of these free for the asking. This book contains words that were spoken and written about the same time as this coin was created. This coin is worth about five bucks. The words in this book? Absolutely priceless. Reading these words will reward you for the rest of your life. Selling this coin? Might get you a burger and fries. Hint: Go for the book. A coin created 2000 years ago is worth about five bucks. The words spoken by Jesus 2000 years ago? Priceless.
Close in prayer. Thank you, God, for the wonderful and exciting message you have given to us through your son, Jesus Christ. May we find the value in those words every day of our life, in everything we say and everything we do.
