Enjoying Our Daily Bread

“Give Us This Day Our Daily Bread”

“How many of you know ‘The Lord’s Prayer’?  We recite it in church every Sunday and there is a phrase which asks “Give us this day our daily bread.”  Do you think “our daily bread” really means “bread.”  Does the Vatican have a deal with the Wonder Bread people to use that phrase?  Or by ‘bread,’ do we mean the stuff that keeps us going day by day?

When I ask to “Give us this day our daily bread,” I am asking for God to continue to give me love and sustenance – food, yes, but also light and air and all the blessings we receive every day from God.  And you know what?  God gives us those things, in abundance.  It’s just that sometimes we don’t recognize it.  You might say, we put ourselves on a diet and only nibble at our ‘daily bread.’  Well, from now on, I want you to gorge!  Not at the snack table after fellowship – save some for the others – but on all the gifts given to you from God.  We have so much for which to be grateful and it is all there for the taking.

Think about all the blessings you have from God and enjoy them.  And for all our gifts and blessings, we say ‘thank you’ and let the children say, ‘Amen.’
