The Trinity – A Three-Sided Coin

John 16:12-15

Lesson: The Trinity
You will need a large coin for this Moment. An Eisenhower silver dollar works well, but if you want to hand out the coin after the moment it could be costly. Some religious stores have coins with messages on them.
We are a Presbyterian church and part of the church’s belief is in the Trinity
This Trinity is of Creator God – you know, “In the beginning, God created…” that Creator God. Sometimes we think of him as an old man with a long white beard sitting on a throne in heaven.
and the Messiah – Jesus the Christ;
 and the Holy Spirit.
Each one is God and together they make God.
Which is a difficult concept. There are not three separate Gods. There is one God. But our God is not made up of three different parts. There is one God and God is the Creator, which is God; the Christ, who is God; and the Spirit, which is God.
Did I mention it’s complicated? Maybe this will help.

This coin is God. Work with me here.
This coin is God. Do you see the face of the coin? That is Creator God. It is part of the coin, but the coin cannot exist without it. This face is God.
The other side is God – the Messiah God whom we call Jesus. It is impossible to have one side of a coin without the other side. A coin must have two sides to make it a coin.
And there is a third part to our coin – our God — that is the edge. A coin cannot be a coin without an edge. Think of the edge of the coin as the Holy Spirit. Each part of the coin is God and God cannot exist without all the parts of the coin – all the parts of God.
It’s a difficult concept so don’t worry if you don’t understand it. Religious Philosophers have been studying this for 1600 years and most are about as far along as you are.
And remember that God – in however you want to think of God – is a God of love; a God who loves you.
Praise God from whom all blessings flow.
Praise him all creatures here below.
Praise him above the heavenly host,
Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost.
Amen
